Edwards Air Force Base hosts desert oases for recreation

In the Mojave Desert, man-made desert ponds located on Edwards Air Force Base serve as recreational sanctuaries for families, researchers, and nature enthusiasts. One such location, the six-acre Branch Memorial Park Pond, is maintained via an underground well to keep depths between two and 12 feet.

While the pond is artificial, it has become a habitat for various birds and wildlife. The site features a fishing dock, picnic areas, barbecue grills, and ten designated campsites. Environmental planner Leah Wilson monitors the pond’s water levels, vegetation, and native species to manage the ecosystem.

Activities such as fishing are permitted, provided visitors have the necessary state and base licenses. The base intends to stock the pond annually with species including largemouth bass, bluegill, and redear sunfish. Swimming and open fires are strictly prohibited at the site.
