Edwidge Danticat explores grief and trauma in new novel Dèy
Edwidge Danticat’s sixth novel, ‘Dèy’ (meaning “mourning” in Haitian Kreyòl), explores themes of grief, community, and inherited trauma. Set primarily in Miami in 2018, the story follows Magnolia, a Haitian American real estate agent who survives a mass shooting at a local shopping mall.
The narrative weaves together Magnolia’s personal struggle to process her trauma with the broader concerns of her family. This includes her relationship with her daughter, Zoe, and her anxiety regarding her aging parents, who have returned to Haiti and face the escalating threat of gang-related violence.
Danticat’s work continues to center Haitian and Haitian American experiences, examining how political instability and displacement affect daily life and human connection.
