Edwin Díaz placed on Dodgers injured list with neck inflammation
The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed closer Edwin Díaz on the injured list due to neck inflammation. While a recent MRI showed no structural or nerve-related issues, the injury follows a difficult period for the veteran reliever.
Díaz, who signed a three-year, $69-million contract, has struggled significantly following his return from elbow surgery earlier this season. In 16 appearances, he has posted an 11.85 ERA and has struggled with consistency in high-leverage situations.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that once Díaz is healthy, the team plans to use him in lower-leverage situations to help him regain his confidence and rhythm before returning to his role as a closer. To bolster the bullpen during his absence, the team is calling up Emmet Sheehan from Triple-A.
