Edwin Encarnación inducted into La Romana Sports Hall of Fame

The La Romana Sports Hall of Fame has inducted its Class of 2026, headlined by former Major League Baseball star Edwin Encarnación and basketball icon Eduardo Gómez. The ceremony, marking the tenth anniversary of the Hall of Fame, also honored the late world boxing champion Julio Gervacio.

A total of 12 individuals were recognized for their athletic contributions to the province. The inductees include baseball players Demetrio Guerrero and Rafael Contreras, basketball players Santo Araujo, Miguel Infante, Fausto Mercedes, and Francisco Sánchez Gautreux, boxer Maribel Contreras, and promoters Deniel Simón Brea and Arquímedes de Jesús.

The induction of Encarnación comes amid ongoing legal scrutiny in La Romana regarding a September 1 incident near Casa de Campo. Authorities are investigating conflicting reports involving an alleged attempted homicide and a counter-complaint filed by Encarnación claiming he was the victim of a shooting. The legal process remains under investigation by the Public Ministry.
