Edwin Sifuna to run for presidency under UDP, Natembeya announces

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has announced that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will seek the presidency in the 2027 General Election using the United Democratic Party (UDP). This move aims to resolve speculation regarding Sifuna's political vehicle and addresses internal divisions within the Linda Mwananchi movement.

Natembeya stated that the UDP will serve as a national party representing the Western Region. He further emphasized that Sifuna should run as the presidential candidate rather than settling for a running mate position, arguing that a strong ticket is essential to challenge President William Ruto.

The UDP's status follows a decision by the Registrar of Political Parties to reject the group's request to rename itself the Ukombozi People's Party (UPP), citing potential confusion with the Ukombozi Alliance. Sifuna is expected to negotiate with other opposition groups, including the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and the Ukombozi Alliance, to coordinate a unified challenge against the current administration.
