EEOC sues Blue Bell Creameries over religious discrimination claim

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit against Blue Bell Creameries, alleging religious discrimination and retaliation. The suit involves a Jewish body shop technician at the company’s facility in Sylacauga, Alabama.

The EEOC claims the employee was fired in March 2025, less than a month after he refused to shave his beard due to his religious beliefs. While the technician’s role required wearing a respirator that typically necessitates a clean-shaven face, the complaint alleges that the company failed to provide a proper accommodation. Although a plant manager reportedly ordered a mask and filter that could fit over a beard, the employee was subsequently terminated for “theft of company time.”

The federal agency asserts that the stated reason for the firing was a pretext for discrimination and that other employees engaged in similar conduct without facing repercussions. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama following unsuccessful attempts at pre-litigation settlement.
