EEOC sues Ohio health system over alleged antisemitism

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit against Bon Secours Mercy Health and its subsidiary, Mercy Health Physicians Youngstown, alleging religious and racial discrimination.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, claims that Dr. Ian Walton, a longtime Jewish orthopedic surgeon, was subjected to antisemitic remarks and unfavorable employment conditions. According to the EEOC, the workplace atmosphere became increasingly hostile following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel, with staff reportedly making disparaging comments regarding Jewish people and the conflict in Gaza. The EEOC alleges that Dr. Walton was ultimately terminated due to his religion and race despite a successful professional history and meeting productivity goals.
