Kano Airport: EFCC probes suspect after large currency seizure

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into Haruna Yusuf following the interception of large sums of undeclared foreign currency at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recovered a total of $73,000, £15,957, and 827,800 Saudi Riyals during routine screenings between August 8 and August 12, 2026.

The seizures occurred in two separate incidents. On August 8, officers discovered 827,800 Saudi Riyals and $53,300 concealed inside footwear within an unaccompanied piece of Saudi Air luggage. On August 12, a secondary screening using non-intrusive inspection technology flagged luggage belonging to Yusuf, arriving on an Ethiopian Airlines flight, which contained $20,000 and £15,957 hidden inside sportswear shoes.

The suspect and the recovered funds were handed over to the EFCC Kano Zonal Directorate for further investigation and potential prosecution for violations of anti-money laundering laws.
