EFCC prosecutes aviation-related fraud cases in Nigeria
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is pursuing multiple high-profile fraud prosecutions involving aviation assets and government contracts in Nigeria.
In a trial in Lagos, a witness testified that assets belonging to Arik Air Limited, valued at N4.9 billion, were allegedly diverted to establish and fund NG Eagle Airlines. The airline was subsequently sold for approximately N149 million. The case involves former Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) Managing Director Ahmed Kuru, Kamilu Alaba Omokide, Roy Ilegbodu, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, and Super Bravo Limited. The defendants face charges including conspiracy, stealing, and abuse of office related to an alleged N76 billion and $31.5 million fraud.
In a separate proceeding at an Abuja High Court, an EFCC investigator testified regarding the prosecution of former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, his daughter Fatima, and son-in-law Hamman Jalal Sule. The group faces a six-count charge involving abuse of office and contract fraud totaling N2.8 billion involving Al Buraq Global Investment Limited. The investigator maintained that the investigation was thorough and that all relevant documents were gathered as proof of evidence.
