EFCC recovers N1.23tn and $684m, secures 10,872 convictions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reported significant enforcement and recovery achievements during the 34-month tenure of Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede. Between October 2023 and July 2026, the agency recovered over N1.23 trillion and $684 million in proceeds of crime, alongside various other foreign currencies. Of the naira recovered, approximately 33 percent was for the federal government, while 67 percent was recovered on behalf of other entities, including state agencies and private individuals.

In terms of judicial outcomes, the EFCC secured 10,872 convictions, maintaining a conviction-to-filing ratio of 75.1 percent. The commission also obtained forfeiture orders for 10,053 assets, including real estate, vehicles, and electronic items. To improve internal accountability, the agency renamed its Department of Internal Affairs to the Department of Ethics and Integrity and implemented a new gift policy for personnel.

As part of a shift toward proactive prevention, the EFCC established the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control Department (FRAC), which aims to monitor suspicious financial movements and freeze assets within 72 hours. The agency is also targeting cryptocurrency-related crimes by utilizing a national confiscation wallet for seized virtual assets.
