EFCC uncovers illegal oil refinery in Ogun State

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered an illegal oil refinery allegedly operated by Chinese nationals in the Ogere area of Ogun State. The facility was discovered on October 31, 2026, by operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 following intelligence gathering and surveillance of illegal sludge oil refining activities.

Although the refinery was found deserted when operatives arrived, investigators discovered waste products from the refining process and underground tanks used for heating and processing sludge oil. Two of the inspected tanks contained substances suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the operators sourced black sludge from Warri in Delta State and Port Harcourt in Rivers State, transporting it to the Ogere facility. The process reportedly involved subjecting the sludge to intense heat and passing it through chambers and filters to produce diesel for the Nigerian market. Security personnel at the site stated that the Chinese operators had not disclosed their identities or the name of the company. The EFCC has taken control of the premises as investigations continue to establish ownership and the full extent of the illegal activities.
