EFCC withdraws cybercrime charges against two Nigerians
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has withdrawn criminal charges against Maryam Isah Shehu and Abubakar Shuraim Abdulhamad. The two were recently arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of cyberstalking and disseminating malicious information intended to tarnish the commission’s reputation.
Maryam Isah Shehu, a final-year student at Bayero University, Kano, was accused of using Instagram to allege that EFCC officials assaulted an individual following a bribery claim. Abubakar Abdulhamad was accused of using X to post an image designed to mimic an official EFCC arrest placard.
EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede ordered the withdrawal of the charges following public outcry and leniency pleas from Shehu’s father and other citizens. While the charges were dropped, Olukoyede warned that the commission would not tolerate deliberate attacks on its institutional reputation.
