Efeler district in Aydın launches historic preservation project
The Efeler municipality in Aydın province has started the "Tarihini Koruyan Efeler Projesi" to safeguard its historic urban fabric. Mayor Anıl Yetişkin said, "Geçmişin izlerini koruyarak geleceğe taşıyacağız" (We will preserve the traces of the past and carry them into the future). The project, supported by the Historic Cities Association (TKB), has begun field surveys in the Köprülü‑Veysipaşa neighbourhood. Expert teams are measuring and drawing architecture on more than a dozen streets (e.g., 1629, 1624, 1620, 1614, 1612, 1610, 1606, 1604, 1617, 1608, 1631, 1627, 1625, 1623, 1621, 1619) to assess the condition of historic buildings and to develop street‑revitalisation plans.
The plan also includes restoring the historic Gümrükönü Hanı and the Hasır Pazarı market to their original form, aiming to turn the area into a cultural‑tourism corridor. Yetişkin expects the completed works to make Efeler a strong centre for culture and tourism, with streets regaining their historic character.
