EFET recalls bamboo-labeled tableware found to be melamine plastic

The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) has issued an immediate recall for several food-contact products marketed as being made from bamboo. Laboratory testing conducted by the General State Chemist revealed that the items are actually composed of melamine resin plastic.

The recalled items include 'SPRING' bamboo plates, 'Bamboo Fiber – Natural Collection' food containers, and 'JULONG COMMODITY Life Style' bamboo cutlery sets. These products are imported by SPRING DEPARTMENT STORE I.K.E., based in Agios Ioannis Rentis, Athens.

EFET noted that the labeling may mislead consumers regarding the composition of the products. Furthermore, the authority highlighted that bamboo, whether in powder or fiber form, is not included in the European list of approved substances for use in plastic materials intended to come into contact with food. Consumers who have purchased these items are urged not to use them.
