Effective methods for organizing garages and storage rooms

To organize a garage or storage space effectively, the recommended approach is to first completely empty the area. This allows for a clear view of the available space before deciding what to return.

Items should be sorted into four specific categories: keep, discard, unsure, and dangerous. For the 'unsure' category, items can be placed in a dated box; if they are not needed after one year, they should be removed. Organizing by category rather than by individual boxes helps identify duplicates, such as multiple hammers or rolls of tape.

When storing items, frequently used objects should be kept between waist and shoulder height, heavy items on the bottom, and rare items on top. Using labeled transparent boxes and shelves is more effective than decorative furniture.

Proper disposal of hazardous materials is essential. Paints, varnishes, thinners, and glues should be taken to municipal recycling centers. Motor and brake oils should be delivered to workshops or designated points. Pesticides, batteries, fluorescent lamps, and appliances also require specific disposal methods. Empty gas canisters must be returned to the supplier rather than being discarded in regular trash or scrap metal.
