Effective methods for preventing and removing bathroom mold
Managing mold in bathrooms requires a combination of proper removal techniques and preventative maintenance. To treat existing mold on porous surfaces like ceilings, experts recommend using 70% to 80% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol to kill mycelium and spores. Silicate paint, which has a high pH value of 11 or more, is effective at preventing new growth but cannot eliminate existing mold; therefore, the infestation must be fully removed before repainting.
Prevention focuses on controlling moisture levels. In shower areas, using a squeegee to remove water from cabin walls and drying damp spots with a towel can prevent spores from settling in grout and tiles. Maintaining a bathroom temperature above 16°C also helps, as colder air holds less moisture, increasing the likelihood of condensation on cold surfaces like ceilings. For those performing self-remediation, safety precautions such as wearing a P2 dust mask, safety goggles, and gloves are advised to avoid inhaling airborne spores.
