Effective plant pest control strategies for Dutch gardeners

Early detection of plant pests is crucial. Small signs such as a few flies around a houseplant or tiny bite marks on garden seedlings should prompt immediate action rather than waiting for a large infestation.

Targeting the larval stage is more effective than only catching adult insects. For fungus gnats (rouwvliegjes), the larvae live in moist potting soil, so improving drainage, using airy soil mixes and removing dead foliage reduces their habitat. Adjust watering to the specific needs of each plant; over‑watering creates the damp conditions that favor gnats, ants and slugs.

Ant nests should be addressed only when they occupy problematic locations such as under terraces or in lawns. Reducing moist, sheltered spots also deters slugs, which thrive in humid cover and feed on young leaves. Physical barriers, removal of hiding places and selective use of metaldehyde‑based products can help manage these pests without widespread chemical treatment.
