Efficiency and features of plug-in space heaters

Discussions regarding plug-in space heaters highlight a distinction between product features and thermodynamic efficiency. While various models offer different benefits—such as the Dreo smart whole-room heater for scheduling, De’Longhi or Dreo oil-filled radiators for silent and gradual warmth, and Dyson models for compact heating and cooling—their fundamental energy efficiency is comparable.

Experts and users note that for standard resistance-based plug-in heaters, 1 kW of power consistently produces 1 kW of heat. Consequently, a heater marketed as “high efficiency” does not necessarily consume less electricity than another resistance model of the same wattage. This differs from heat pumps, which move heat rather than generating it through resistance. While design choices like fan-driven versus oil-filled can affect user comfort and noise levels, they do not alter the basic energy math of heat production.
