Energy efficiency strategies focus on insulation and heat recovery
Various reports highlight strategies for improving residential energy efficiency and managing thermal energy. For homeowners, prioritizing the building envelope—such as insulating roofs and walls—is essential before upgrading heating technology to ensure systems like heat pumps operate efficiently.
Specific cost-saving measures include insulating heating pipes. According to a Finanztip model calculation, insulating 25 meters of pipe could save approximately 635 euros in gas costs or 780 euros in heating oil costs annually. In small living spaces like 20-square-meter tiny houses, proper insulation and air-to-air heat pumps are recommended to maintain warmth during winter.
On an industrial scale, researchers from Arizona State University found that data centers release significant waste heat, which can raise surrounding air temperatures by up to 2.2 degrees Celsius. In Germany, this waste heat is already being utilized to heat residential apartments, turning a byproduct of computing into a functional energy source.
