Efial corruption case trial begins in Spain
The oral trial for the Efial case has commenced at the Audiencia Nacional, investigating a suspected corruption network involving the fraudulent awarding of municipal public contracts and the collection of commissions through the Efial consultancy firm. The investigation involves nearly twenty defendants, including several former mayors, who face charges of administrative malfeasance and misappropriation of public funds.
The alleged fraud is estimated to exceed 8.7 million euros across various Catalan municipalities. The most significant impact was reported in L'Ametlla de Mar, with over 4.5 million euros in defrauded resources, followed by Ascó with approximately 2 million euros, Tortosa with 1.6 million euros, and Torredembarra with approximately 504,000 euros. Other affected areas include Vandells, Cambrils, Barcelona, Llinars del Valls, Masquefa, and La Seu d'Urgell.
The trial process began with preliminary questions in Madrid, with police officers responsible for the investigation scheduled to testify. Witness testimonies are expected to follow in mid-October, with the final stage of the trial slated for late October in San Fernando de Henares.
