EFKA debts reach €52.4 billion in Greece
Debts owed by farmers and self-employed professionals to the EFKA social security organization have reached approximately €52.4 billion as of the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents nearly one-quarter of Greece's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Data from the EFKA second quarterly progress report for 2026 indicates a significant increase from €51.78 billion in the first quarter of the same year. The report highlights that 84.5% of the 2,117,174 debtors—totaling approximately 1,788,473 individuals—owe up to €30,000. Specifically, 69.7% of debtors owe amounts under €15,000.
Proposed measures to address the crisis include the cancellation of old debts and interest increases without reducing insurance time, the reinstatement of a 120-installment settlement plan with debt haircuts and low interest rates, and raising the debt ceiling for retirement eligibility to at least €50,000.
