Eger man faces prison for thefts from unlocked cars

A man is facing prosecution in Eger, Hungary, for a series of thefts targeting vehicles left unlocked overnight. According to the Eger District Prosecution, the defendant entered a closed apartment complex courtyard in November 2025 and stole a wallet from a parked car. The stolen items included nearly 100,000 forints in cash, along with various personal documents such as an ID card, driver's license, tax card, health insurance card, and a bank card.

The defendant reportedly discarded the personal documents and bank card nearby, allowing the victim to recover them, but kept the cash. The prosecution alleges the man committed two additional thefts using the same method within a two-month period, stealing wallets, documents, cash, and an electronic cigarette.

Due to the theft of multiple official documents alongside cash and payment instruments, the crimes are classified under more serious legal categories. The prosecution has requested a sentence of 3 years and 3 months in prison, along with a 4-year ban from practicing public affairs, provided the defendant confesses to the crimes during the preparatory hearing. The defendant remains in custody.
