Egg Price Hikes Hit Sri Lanka and India Amid Rising Costs

Sri Lankan egg producers announced a new retail price of Rs 41 per white egg effective Monday, 20 January. Eggs are a staple for households, and the increase is expected to strain low‑income families and small food businesses. Producers cite higher feed and operational costs as the primary driver.

In India's Odisha state, the retail price of an egg rose from Rs 7 to Rs 9 per piece. Officials attributed the hike to stronger international demand, lower domestic production caused by heat‑related bird mortality, and rising export shipments to Asian and African markets. The state announced a subsidy of up to Rs 1 crore to support egg producers and boost local output.
