Egg prices in Hungary decline amid increased EU imports

Egg prices in Hungary have decreased, with the average price reaching 83-84 HUF per unit according to Central Statistical Office (KSH) data. In major supermarket chains, average prices have fallen below 80 HUF, with some promotional prices dipping as low as 55-65 HUF.

This downward trend is attributed to easing supply concerns following earlier waves of avian influenza. Additionally, imports into the European Union have seen a significant surge; European Commission data indicates that egg and egg product imports rose by 72% in the first three months of 2026 compared to the previous year. Nearly three-quarters of these imports originate from Ukraine and Turkey.

While EU egg prices fell by approximately 23% from their spring peak, the market remains influenced by fluctuating costs for feed, energy, animal health, and logistics. The market has faced volatility since 2017 due to factors such as the fipronil scandal and avian influenza outbreaks.
