Egg storage and freshness testing tips
To ensure food safety and reduce waste, proper egg storage and freshness testing are essential. Eggs should be stored in a stable, cool location inside the refrigerator on a shelf rather than in the door, as the door is subject to frequent temperature fluctuations every time the appliance is opened.
To check if an egg is still fresh, a water test can be performed. Placing a raw egg in a glass of cold water reveals its condition based on its position: an egg that lies flat at the bottom is very fresh; an egg that stands upright on its tip at the bottom is older but still consumable; and an egg that floats to the surface has lost too much moisture and should not be eaten.
