Egg yolks safe for heart health when eaten in moderation

Nutrition experts in Indonesia say that consuming egg yolks does not automatically raise blood cholesterol or increase heart‑disease risk. Dr Karina Rahmadia Ekawidyani of IPB University notes that yolks are rich in vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients, and that overall diet quality has a larger impact on cholesterol levels than the cholesterol in a single egg.

Research shows a healthy adult can safely eat one whole egg per day; risk may appear only when intake exceeds two eggs daily or when yolks are prepared with excessive saturated or trans fats, such as repeatedly frying in palm‑oil or adding butter. Recommended cooking methods include boiling, steaming or grilling, and mixing yolk with egg whites can reduce cholesterol intake for high‑risk individuals. People with existing high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity or a family history of cardiovascular problems should monitor their lipid profiles and consider limiting yolk consumption.

Overall, egg yolks are considered a nutritious food component when part of a balanced diet.
