Eggs and Protein: Nutrition Experts Clarify Cholesterol Limits and Alternative Sources

Nutrition researchers say moderate egg consumption is safe for most people. Dr. Theresa DeLorenzo explained, “Eggs have a bad reputation because they contain cholesterol, but dietary cholesterol isn’t the main factor raising blood cholesterol. Saturated fats from cheese, butter and red meat are the primary drivers of LDL cholesterol.” She added that the impact of eggs depends on the overall diet, noting that fiber‑rich, low‑saturated‑fat meals can offset concerns.

Both experts advise against discarding egg yolks. “Don’t throw away the yolk,” DeLorenzo said, highlighting lutein and choline’s benefits for eye and brain health. Egg whites are recommended for those seeking protein without extra fat or calories, though they lack the full nutrient profile of a whole egg. A suggested compromise is one whole egg plus additional whites.

For those limiting eggs, the guidance expands to other protein sources: lean meats such as chicken breast or turkey, soy products, nuts, seeds, Greek yogurt, and legumes combined with grains. These foods supply high‑quality protein, essential micronutrients, and fiber while keeping saturated fat low.
