Shane Gillis sparks controversy with SNL monologue

Comedian Shane Gillis has sparked widespread controversy following his opening monologue as host of Saturday Night Live. During the October 10 episode, Gillis made derogatory remarks regarding women’s gym attire, using a slur to describe women wearing athletic shorts.

The comments triggered significant backlash from various public figures. Actor Dan Levy criticized the remarks as misogynistic, stating that the issue is an “everybody issue” rather than just a women’s issue. Former SNL cast members Ego Nwodim and Cecily Strong also responded to the monologue through social media, with Nwodim using sarcasm to address the comments.

While some, such as SNL cast member Michael Che, defended the segment as comedy, others expressed concern over the impact of such language. The controversy also extended to social media, where NFL star Travis Kelce faced criticism from fans after appearing to “like” a video of the monologue on Instagram. As of the latest reports, NBC and Saturday Night Live have not issued a formal response to the backlash.
