Egyetemista Lista challenges voting restrictions and addresses minority rights

The Egyetemista Lista, a student-led electoral list in Serbia, has criticized recent proposals regarding voting rights for citizens living abroad. The group characterized a proposal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to restrict the opening of foreign polling stations as a “shameful sabotage of the electoral process” and an attack on the constitutional rights of the diaspora.

The list argued that while the government often praises the patriotism of citizens living abroad, these new measures represent an attempt to manipulate the election by potentially eliminating polling locations in cities with high concentrations of Serbian citizens. They emphasized that the authority to decide on polling stations rests with the Republic Electoral Commission, not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a separate context regarding minority representation, Andrea Beszédes Nagy, a parliamentary candidate on the Egyetemista Lista, discussed the needs of the Hungarian minority in Vojvodina. She emphasized that minority interests, such as language rights and community-specific needs, must be addressed alongside national reconstruction, noting that legal protections for minorities are ineffective if basic infrastructure and employment are dictated by party interests rather than merit.
