Egypt adjusts trade policies for sugar exports and red meat imports
Egypt has authorized the resumption of sugar exports through the end of 2026, provided that domestic requirements are satisfied first. This decision follows a nearly three-year restriction on overseas shipments. Local producers, represented by the Sugar Crops Council, have faced challenges due to rising stocks and competition from cheaper imports from countries like Brazil, India, and Thailand.
In a separate trade development, South Africa and Egypt have concluded negotiations regarding a Veterinary Health Certificate for red meat. This agreement allows South African beef and livestock producers to access the Egyptian consumer market, offering a critical new outlet for the South African agricultural sector as it manages significant Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreaks.
