Egypt advances Kitchener Drain water and waste project

Egypt's Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, met with regional governors and officials from the Arab Organization for Industrialization to review the progress of the Kitchener Drain water quality improvement project. The solid waste component of the project is being implemented across the governorates of Gharbia, Dakahlia, and Kafr El-Sheikh.

The initiative is funded by a 79 million euro loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and an 8 million euro grant from the European Union. Key objectives include the construction of five solid waste recycling plants located in Dafra, Belqas, Al Hamul, Kafr El-Sheikh, and Desouk.

Progress reports indicated the completion of two intermediate stations, the rehabilitation and closure of the public landfill in Qallabsho, and the development of eight garages. The project also includes upgrading mechanical collection campaigns and providing various equipment, such as loaders and waste transport vehicles, to support the integrated waste management system.
