Egypt advances past Australia on penalties at 2026 World Cup

Egypt and Australia played a knockout match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 4 July 2026 at Dallas' AT&T Stadium in the United States. Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt while defender Mohamed Hany scored an own‑goal in the 55th minute, giving the hosts a 1‑1 draw.

After 120 minutes the game went to a penalty shoot‑out. Egypt held their nerve and won 4‑2, securing a place in the round of 16. The victory marks Egypt’s first advance beyond the group stage in a World Cup, and it ends the tournament for Australia.

The result also guarantees Salah and his teammates another match in the knockout phase, while the Australian side will return home having been eliminated.
