Egypt affirms right to peaceful nuclear energy at IAEA conference
During the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, affirmed that the peaceful use of atomic energy is an inherent right for all nations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Esmat highlighted Egypt's ongoing research and development in nuclear applications aligned with the Egypt Vision 2030. He provided updates on the El Dabaa nuclear power plant project, noting significant progress including the installation of the first unit's reactor pressure vessel and the manufacturing of key components like turbines and steam generators.
Regarding international policy, the Minister emphasized Egypt's commitment to the highest safety and security standards and full transparency. He expressed support for technological advancements in small and modular reactors but cautioned against imposing additional restrictions on access to such technologies. Furthermore, Egypt intends to re-propose a resolution regarding the application of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East to support the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region.
