Egypt and Hungary agree to complete railway carriage delivery

Egypt and Hungary have reached an agreement to complete the delivery of 44 outstanding railway carriages to Egypt. The deal, announced following bilateral talks in Budapest between Hungarian officials and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, aims to resolve a long-running and financially sensitive contract inherited from a previous administration.

The remaining 44 carriages, which include air-conditioned first-class, second-class, and buffet cars, will be manufactured and delivered by the Dunakeszi Railway Vehicle Repair and Manufacturing Company, a facility now owned by the Hungarian state railway company, MÁV.

In addition to the new deliveries, the agreement includes warranty repairs for 31 carriages that were previously delivered to Egypt. The settlement also addresses related financial obligations and loan contracts. Hungarian Minister for Transport and Investment David Vitézy stated that the solution protects Hungarian taxpayers’ interests while serving Egyptian passengers and mitigating previous diplomatic and operational risks.
