Egypt and Iraq discuss sovereignty and regional security in Cairo meeting

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Ammar al-Hakim, leader of Iraq’s Hikma Movement, in Cairo to discuss bilateral relations and regional security. During the meeting, el-Sisi expressed Egypt’s support for Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, praising the Iraqi government’s efforts to combat corruption and restrict weapons to state institutions.

Al-Hakim briefed the Egyptian president on several key Iraqi developments, including the upcoming conclusion of the International Coalition’s mission against ISIS at the end of September. He also addressed the Iraqi government’s efforts to manage weapons outside the framework of the state and noted Iraq’s capacity to navigate economic challenges caused by regional tensions.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of peaceful solutions to regional conflicts and the necessity of avoiding escalatory actions. Discussions also covered the Palestinian cause, with el-Sisi highlighting Egypt’s efforts to support the establishment of a Palestinian state and Al-Hakim expressing support for Egyptian initiatives regarding the reconstruction of Gaza.
