El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project advances with Rosatom

Egypt is advancing its El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project through strategic cooperation with Russia's Rosatom. Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, recently met with Rosatom's First Deputy Director General, Andrei Petrov, to review construction progress and ensure adherence to the project timeline.

Key developments include the successful installation of the bottom plate for the third nuclear unit, a critical component for the VVER-1200 reactor pool. Preparations are also underway to receive the first shipment of nuclear fuel, which is expected to arrive in Egypt by May 2027. The plant, consisting of four 1200 MW units, is scheduled to begin actual operations between 2029 and 2030.

The project aims to generate approximately 37,843 GWh of electricity annually, significantly reducing natural gas consumption and supporting Egypt's 2030 national energy strategy. Additionally, Egypt and Russia are discussing a proposal to integrate seawater desalination technologies at the site to maximize economic and environmental benefits.
