Egypt and Spain collaborate on agricultural water management project

Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, met to review the progress of the project ‘Supporting the Modernization of Water Resources Management in the Agricultural Sector in Egypt.’ The initiative is being implemented in cooperation with Spain.

The project focuses on smart water management, utilizing tools such as mathematical models, digital platforms, machine learning, satellite imagery, and drones to optimize resource use. Key objectives include improving water planning, increasing irrigation efficiency, enhancing the use of agricultural drainage water, and maintaining water quality.

A major component of the project involves implementing smart irrigation systems in five Egyptian governorates: Alexandria, Beheira, Qalyubia, Dakahlia, and Sohag. These locations serve as diverse agricultural models to test and localize smart irrigation technologies, with the goal of increasing productivity per unit of water and expanding these models to other regions in the future.
