Egypt and U.S. discuss maritime and transport partnerships
Egypt and the United States are discussing enhanced strategic partnerships in the transport and maritime sectors. During the Port Infrastructure and Maritime Innovation Conference in Cairo, Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir met with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Mark Mitchell and U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Robert Silverman to explore collaborative opportunities.
Key areas for potential cooperation include the management and operation of major port terminals, such as a container terminal at Al-Mex port and a general cargo terminal at Damietta port. Egypt also proposed establishing a commercial shipbuilding shipyard in Damietta and creating joint industrial logistics zones. These zones would facilitate manufacturing products for export to the U.S. while importing raw materials from America.
Furthermore, Egypt is implementing eight integrated international logistics corridors—including routes like Arish/Taba and Sokhna/Alexandria—to connect Red Sea and Mediterranean ports with industrial and agricultural zones. The Minister highlighted opportunities for American companies in Gerjoub Port and potential collaboration in electric towing technologies.
