Egypt Parliament delays vote on military support for Saudi Arabia

The Egyptian Parliament has postponed a vote on a request from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to authorize military support for Saudi Arabia. The deliberations, originally intended to address potential defense assistance against Houthi attacks in Yemen, have been adjourned until October 26.

President al-Sisi stated that Egypt is prepared to take “any measure” to protect its Gulf allies, emphasizing a defensive stance. The National Defense Council has already expressed its support for providing necessary assistance to safeguard Saudi security and stability. However, the Egyptian Constitution requires a two-thirds parliamentary majority to deploy armed forces on combat missions abroad.

Political reactions within the parliament have been mixed. While several blocs support the measure, citing that Saudi security is linked to Egyptian national security, the Egyptian Social Democratic Party has instructed its lawmakers to abstain. The party cited a lack of sufficient information regarding the mission's specific objectives, duration, costs, and potential risks to Egyptian soldiers.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the impact on Red Sea maritime security and the Suez Canal. Meanwhile, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar has called for urgent mediation by Arab and Muslim leaders to resolve regional conflicts and prevent further escalation.
