Egypt begins pomegranate export season with stable harvest

Egypt's pomegranate export season is commencing with a staggered harvest schedule. Sour varieties began production approximately 20 days ago, the 116 variety is currently starting, and the Wonderful variety is expected to follow in October.

Annual production in Egypt is estimated at approximately 800,000 tonnes. According to Abdelkader Habony, manager of Habony Group, production remains stable as new cultivation areas compensate for aging trees and climate-related losses. Unlike some North African neighbors, Egypt has not experienced recent intense heatwaves, though humidity levels have been higher.

The two primary export varieties serve different sectors: the 116 variety is primarily used for processing in Europe, while the higher-sugar Wonderful variety is intended for fresh consumption in Russia, Europe, and various Arab countries. While farm-gate prices remain stable, export prices face uncertainty due to fluctuating demand and rising costs for exporters. Current growth strategies focus on strengthening presence in established markets like Russia and Europe rather than entering new ones.
