Egypt Cabinet reviews measures to combat negative social media practices

The Egyptian Cabinet has reviewed a report detailing regulatory, legislative, and technical measures to address negative social media practices. The initiative aims to protect Egyptian family values and social cohesion.

Key recommendations include a multi-sectoral awareness campaign involving religious institutions like Al-Azhar and the Coptic Church, as well as educational reforms. The Ministry of Education is proposed to introduce specific curricula and lessons to educate students on the risks of harmful content and how to report it.

On the technical front, the government plans to strengthen the role of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation. This includes transforming the existing Content Unit into a national technical center capable of automated monitoring to identify violators. The report also suggests establishing an operations room to classify violations and implement graduated responses, ranging from warnings to service suspension and judicial reporting.
