Egypt celebrates Virgin Mary feast with large gatherings in Assiut
Thousands of worshippers are gathering in Egypt, particularly in Assiut, to celebrate the feast of the Virgin Mary. At the Drenka Monastery in Assiut, large crowds have arrived to participate in prayers, masses, and spiritual activities, marking a significant religious season linked to the Holy Family's journey through Egypt.
Pope Tawadros II recently met with Anba Youannes, the Bishop of Assiut, to discuss the ongoing celebrations at the Drenka Monastery. The Pope praised the efforts of state security and executive agencies in ensuring the festivities remain organized and safe for the large number of visitors. He also noted the importance of local government support in managing the seasonal influx of pilgrims.
In addition to formal religious services, many Coptic families observe long-standing traditions during this period. In various governorates, including Upper Egypt, families engage in communal practices such as animal sacrifices, with the meat being shared among relatives, neighbors, and those in need to foster social solidarity and community bonds.
