Egypt commemorates late Quran reciter Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Wahab al‑Tantawi

On July 26, 2026, Egypt's Ministry of Awqaf marked the death anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Wahab al‑Tantawi, a celebrated Quran reciter who died on the same date in 2017. Born on 3 October 1947 in the village of Al‑Nasimeya, Monufia Governorate, he memorized the Qur'an before age ten, studied at Al‑Azhar University, and began a radio career in 1985 that led to nationwide and international fame. He performed Ramadan recitations and Quranic programmes across the Arab world and in countries such as the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Austria, Germany, Japan and the Gulf states. The Ministry highlighted his gentle voice, artistic delivery, and lasting influence on generations of Qur'an lovers in Egypt and abroad, describing him as a “proud ambassador of the State of Recitation.”
