Egypt converts 1.1 million illegal electricity meters to legal status

The Egyptian government and the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced that about 1.1 million illegal "kodi" meters have been converted to legal meters. The conversion is part of a broader programme to regularise the roughly 4.6 million kodi meters nationwide, with a further 1.4 million slated for conversion in the next phase.

Parliamentary committees have been monitoring the issue, submitting 59 inquiries and coordinating meetings with three ministries. For units that have been regularised, the authorities will adjust the billing system rather than replace the meters, and owners of old buildings can obtain a "Mokafila" document from the land registry to facilitate the legalisation process. The effort targets four main problems linked to the meter crisis and aims to reduce the financial and administrative burden on consumers.
