Egypt court orders closure of Mada Masr and fines editor Lina Attalah

An Egyptian court has ordered the closure of Mada Masr, one of the country’s last prominent independent news outlets, and imposed a fine of 3 million Egyptian pounds (approximately $53,500) on its editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah. The New Cairo Misdemeanour Court also ordered the confiscation of the outlet’s equipment and devices after convicting Attalah of operating an unlicensed website.

Attalah was taken into custody following the verdict but was released several hours later after the fine was paid in full. During the proceedings, Attalah’s legal team reported that the judge refused requests to review case files or call witnesses, and instead appointed a court-ordered lawyer despite objections from Attalah and her eight defense attorneys.

Attalah also discovered during her release that she had been sentenced in absentia in 2024 to one year in prison on charges of publishing false news. Her lawyers have challenged that ruling, with a retrial hearing scheduled for November 11.

International human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the Committee to Protect Journalists, have condemned the ruling, describing it as a major blow to press freedom in Egypt. Mada Masr has stated it had repeatedly applied for an operating license since 2018 without receiving a definitive response.
