Egypt Court reduces Tunisian flight attendant's sentence in New Cairo murder case

Egypt’s Court of Cassation has reduced the prison sentence of Tunisian flight attendant Amira Bint Hamad from 15 years to seven years for the 2023 killing of her daughter, Tara, in New Cairo.

Bint Hamad was previously convicted of premeditated murder after strangling her daughter while she slept. During the legal proceedings, her defense argued that she was suffering from an acute psychological disturbance. The defense highlighted that Bint Hamad had become involved in spiritual practices and energy healing prior to the incident and had attempted to take her own life following the crime.

The court’s decision follows an appeal by the defense team, which challenged the initial medical assessments and argued that her mental state had temporarily deteriorated. This ruling is considered final and is not subject to further appeal before another criminal court.
