Egypt digitises 41% of TV archives and upgrades historic Maspero building

Egypt is set to digitise 41% of its national radio and television archives by April, part of a larger effort to preserve around one million audio‑video tapes—approximately 800,000 hours—dating back to 1934. The project, overseen by the National Media Authority, employs artificial intelligence for cataloguing and converting legacy material into secure digital formats.

President Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi met with senior staff of the Egyptian Radio & Television Union (ERTU) on 27 July to discuss modernising the iconic Maspero studios. The plan includes upgrading technical infrastructure, enhancing production efficiency, and expanding distribution through digital streaming platforms. The President directed that the archive’s progress be publicly presented and called for close coordination among state bodies and technology partners to ensure the nation’s cultural memory is preserved and made digitally accessible.
