Egypt emerges as a technology hub for sweet potato exports

Egypt is establishing itself as a specialized hub for sweet potato production and technology. Sweet Potato International (SPI) has launched a platform that integrates certified planting material, North Carolina-based technology, professional cultivation, and access to the European market.

According to the Egyptian General Organization for Export and Import Control, Egypt's sweet potato exports reached 355,069 tons during the 2024/2025 season, representing a 54.1% increase over the previous season. The European Union accounted for 197,774 tons, or approximately 56% of the total exports.

Ihab Sharaf, founder of Sweet Potato International, noted that the crop is transitioning from a low-cost mass product to a professional export crop. He emphasized that maintaining export quality requires managing the entire value chain, from the mother plant and field management through to harvesting, storage, and transport.
