Egypt expands diabetes care for children via CGM technology

Egypt's '100 Million Health' presidential initiative is expanding healthcare services for children with Type 1 diabetes by introducing Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology. The program aims to provide smart monitoring tools to help children manage their condition more effectively and live normal lives.

Dr. Randa Darwish, a pediatric consultant at the National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology, noted that the CGM device—a small sensor placed under the skin—provides continuous glucose readings via an electronic application. This allows both doctors and families to track glucose trends and detect fluctuations accurately. Currently, the device is available in two health insurance hospitals, with plans to expand to eight centers. The initial phase targets approximately 500 children aged 4 to 6 years.

In addition to technological advancements, medical experts emphasize the importance of recognizing early symptoms of diabetes in children, such as unexplained weight loss despite increased appetite, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and abdominal pain. There is also a call for increased health education within schools to support students living with the disease.
