Egypt electricity tariff residential slabs 12% increase state subsidy

The Egyptian government approved a new accounting tariff for residential electricity, increasing rates by an average of 12% while keeping the first consumption tier (0‑50 kWh) unchanged at 68 piastres per kilowatt‑hour. Higher slabs were raised, for example the 51‑100 kWh tier to 87 piastres, the 101‑200 kWh tier to 1.06 EGP, and the 1000+ kWh tier to 2.88 EGP per kilowatt‑hour.

The state will subsidise the gap between production costs and the new tariffs, amounting to about 100 billion Egyptian pounds each year. Consumers bear a growing share of the bill: roughly 25% at 50 kWh (the state covers 103 EGP), 30% at 100 kWh (state covers 191 EGP), and the share rises to 88% for consumption between 700‑1000 kWh, with full cost passed to users above 2000 kWh.

The tariff changes take effect from the July billing cycle, so August bills reflect the higher rates. Opposition parties and a parliamentarian, Ahmed Farghali, have criticised the increase as an undue burden on households.
